Why we developed ACTIVE SPINE 3.0

Carrying heavy gear in the mountains is demanding. Steep approaches, multi-day hikes, and scrambling over rough terrain often cause discomfort, fatigue, and reduced mobility. Traditional backpack systems can amplify these issues by restricting your body’s movement and forcing your muscles to work harder.

  • Mammut athlete climbing rocky terrain with a Mammut backpack, wearing purple pants and red sunglasses on a sunny day.
  • Two hikers wearing Mammut hooded jackets and backpacks trek across rocky mountain terrain at sunrise, showcasing premium outdoor gear for mountaineering.
  • Hiker wearing Mammut backpack and purple pants climbing rocky terrain, with a water bottle in the side pocket.
  • Close-up of a person’s hand opening a Mammut light gray hiking backpack with a mesh pocket, outdoors on grass.

Our award-winning ACTIVE SPINE 3.0 distributes weight evenly, keeping your load centered for stability. Two pivoting points are connected by a lightweight glass fiber rod, allowing the hip belt and shoulder straps to mirror your natural walking motion. This third-generation design is lighter than ever, reducing strain so you can focus on the trail ahead.

We put ACTIVE SPINE 3.0 to the test

We studied ACTIVE SPINE and its effects on your performance at
the University of Applied Science Technikum Vienna. The results confirmed our hypothesis: compared to common carrying systems, ACTIVE SPINE 3.0 increases your range of motion by 14% in the hip area and 22% in the shoulder area.
